One of the more fun and entertaining things that I've found about reading the Space Odyssey quartet is that a few of the hypotheses I've had since watching the movies are apparently spot-on! Now, since I'm not done-done with the books, I'm not sure if my interpretations are in the same context as canon, but it's really neat to know that my (pretentious spirit fingers) "critical reading skills" (/pretentious spirit fingers) are up-to-date!

Spoilers ahead for a property that premiered in the 60s and 80s!

So I first hypothesized that the monolith is a kind of "black box technology" for living creatures' growth/evolution in the form of a doorway. I was... partially right? In that the monolith is described as a hallway to a grand central station in the 2001 novel, and is used as a way to connect the protagonist of the novel to the next step in what seems to be a new level of existence (from Clarke's perspective, anyway). I have no idea if the monolith is, like, evil or anything, and has ulterior motives for its actions, or if it even is sentient to begin with. Is it a tool being used, or is it its own individual? (shrug emoji)

I've also been reading a few opinion pieces about how, more or less, the entirety of the Space Odyssey quartet can be viewed through a queer/LGBTQIA+ lens, which is a relief for my "is this a thinly-veiled metaphor, or am I reading too much into it again?" feelings.

So yeah! It's been interesting connecting the hints and suggestions that the author's been putting out there.
