For the first time in what feels like forever, I was able to sit down and write for a (fan)fiction project. While I didn't make internal word count (I consider 100 words in a sitting to be... not necessarily ideal, exactly, but after having a kid it's better than not writing, I'd say), I'm glad I got to get another bare-bones scene set up. I'm happy that I'm trying something new with what I'm writing, even though my writing style isn't completely changing to suit the subject matter (I tend to write gentle vignettes or soft fix-its; this one's an unreliable narrator and angst fic. Yes I know fic is for fun/a hobby, but I like trying new things in what I do for fun).

Has anyone else surprised themselves with their new ideas, or do you know your strengths and play to them?

I'm not sure if this will make sense, but: does anyone else who makes fannish content just... not interact with the "rest" of the fandom until finished with their current project/fan work? Part of the reason for it is that I don't have a lot of time to socialize with everyone else in the fandom and get my own projects done. ...And for whatever reason, I don't even get Dreamwidth notifications until way after the comment's been posted. The other issue is that I don't want to be subconsciously influenced by other folks' interpretation of the characters/universe and then accidentally plagiarize* it.

*Your mileage may vary on whether or not concept/idea theft is even possible in fandom, since it's a shared sandbox of gray legality in the first place.

Any thoughts?

Talking about Writing and Feelings About Writing (for a small-ish fandom) ahead!

It feels really weird to be two-thirds of the way through the fanfic I'm working on--I honestly didn't think I'd see the day. Here I am, though, with the third of four chapters done...ish? I prefer to have at least six-and-a-half to seven pages done for a chapter; it's a good, easy-to-read amount, and gives me a sense of accomplishment! However, there's only so much I can write on a certain scene before I really ought to move on. For this particular chapter I have just barely six pages. Six pages leaves me... uneasy, I guess. Time for a second read-through for sensory details!

Back to the opening, though: I'm so close to being done with the story as a whole--and I am excited and nervous. Excited, because I'm looking forward to exploring where the story can finally go; nervous because... well. It's the only story of mine that's received a lot more attention than I anticipated, even though I was kind of... hoping it'd fill a niche in the fandom? (shrug emoji) While making it to rec lists sounds nice, I am absolutely terrified of the backdraft of "It's not as good as I was told it'd be" (and being told that, vehemently, to my (digital) face).

I am excited to be close to finishing up, though! I'll get to move on to the other story I'm working on for the same fandom! I will finally have time to write up a meta post that's been bouncing around my head like a mid-2000s Windows screensaver! I could even, oh my, get involved in a different fandom altogether! I've had this particular version of the characters in my head for so long that it feels almost wrong to say good-bye, even though it's not quite a good-bye, but more of a "see you later".
